A Suitcase Study: Packing in Style. A Creativepreneur Shares Her Story.

Traveling is a love for many. Packing for it isn’t typically part of the romance. This is when clients, like Tracy, call on me.  She’s a creativepreneur, active in her community, loving spouse and pet owner. On occasion this can mean limited time for stylish and efficient packing. Here’s her story.

Tracy’s Packing in Style Dilemma

I often joke that I need Garanimals for Adults, for those old enough to remember the matching tags to help kids, er, parents put together outfits. I’ve been working with Amy Juneau (Owner/Stylist of GenuINe STYLE) for over a year now, and while I admit I’ve gotten more fashion sense just from having her work with me in my closet and in stores, when it comes to packing for travel, I struggle.

With limited real estate in the suitcase and a desire to have “activity-appropriate” options–as well as many options to choose from, I’ve learned to rely on the expert vs. my untrained eye. Sure, Amy has taught me certain “tricks of the trade” for dressing myself over time so these days when I’m planning a trip, I can make a few outfits that I *think* work. Because there’s always room for improvement and I do like to be sure about my choices, I usually reach out to my trusted stylist with pics I’ve taken of the self-styled outfits, my Wish List Pinterest board, and photos of my items under consideration laid out–all so she can help me make good, final decisions in terms of packing and purchases. It might seem silly to put so much effort into this or to invest in this type of support, but considering I’m never in front of the camera more than when I’m on vacation (thanks to a snap-happy husband), I really do want my memories to be of good times–not bad looks.

Tracy’s Challenges & Solutions

Amy and I worked remotely together to whittle down the choices. She told me what wasn’t working and why and what might work better. Sometimes, what I had put together wasn’t helping my petite stature and she knows my challenge is I often feel I look “dumpy”–especially in shorts. I consider shorts the necessary evil at my age and height and yet a critical item for most of my vacations. I only own 2 pairs of “public-facing” shorts–and one I don’t even really wear at all. For this trip, Amy helped me decide to keep a pair of Kut brand cutoffs I had ordered–and feel good about my initial styling choices.

One of my other biggest challenges is shoes–not only how many and which ones to take but pairing them with outfits. So for example, I’d have a picture with two different shoes on/represented for an outfit and Amy would advise on the best choice. Plus, she helped me justify swapping Converse tennies for wedges–which brings more oomph to certain outfits.

Narrowing down the shoe options.

She also virtually put together additional outfits with pieces I planned to take, such as a scarf halter top with the instruction “try doing a partial tuck of front hem, leaving the sides to hang” for a more updated and polished look.

Some feedback highlights Amy gave are educational so that I keep improving; here are a few gems:

  • “Drawstring tops are tricky. They can look great or messy depending on how it sits on anyone’s frame and how much material is being gathered and where.”
  • “Petites must be wary of when fabric wants to swallow their frame. I personally had to leave some kimono-esque robes/shawls at the store for same reason.”
  • (comment on photo) “The sarong worn as a long vest doesn’t look like it’s overwhelming you here, because it’s worn with less fabric underneath. This works. I like it!”

The  Outcome: Packed in GenuINe STYLE for Happy Travels

Amy not only validated some of my choices but also came up with new outfit suggestions or tweaks–based on my photographed items and her knowledge of my closet and jewelry box. That was a major advantage of having been a long-time client. For example, I’ve a unique rhinestone necklace with dangling fish (perfect for a Pisces girl) and Amy suggested adding that to a coral maxi dress to change up the look. I’d paired it with large hoop earrings before, which I planned to wear a lot on this strip, so this option would keep my looks (and photos!) interesting and different enough.

Take-Away for Stylish Travel Lovers

Bottom line: If you’re obsessive about packing, like I am (I even have a Pinterest board “Travelling in Style“) and want to look your best and feel great on vacation, I highly recommend working with Amy on your packing list and purchases.

15 Packing Tips for Stress-free Style and a Happy Holiday!

Holiday travel time is here – a time for packing, which most avoid till the final hour.

You don’t want to be unprepared, and some of us want choices – without needing to spend time shopping for them in between family dinners, and parties.

Which of your favorite pieces do you bring? How can you keep them from becoming a hot mess more ugly than a knotted pile of half-burnt Christmas tree lights in an overstuffed suitcase?

Answers to these burning questions and more can be found among these holiday packing tips:

  1. Bring a bold sparkly piece of jewelry you love. Whether it’s a choker, necklace, ring or earrings you can let it do most of the talking for your more festive holiday outfits. Wear it alone, or balance it out with another more subdued complementary piece of jewelry.

  1. holiday packing tips for holiday styleSuitcase space seems to be an issue? Or, are you worried your party outfit may be delayed en route? Consider this idea I discovered some years ago via Vogue or Elle magazine for ensuring your holiday attire makes it to the party. Layer your party dress over leggings, or skirt, and stack /pile your jewelry, while wearing your fancy shoes, too.

  1. Not sure how formal or informal an event may be? Pack a satin, metallic or sequined handbag, scarf, and or, shoes to instantly dress up more basic items.

  1. Here’s one way to keep your necklaces from getting tangled. Use a sheet of plastic wrap big enough to place your necklaces with about a half-inch space in between each. Lay another piece of plastic wrap on top of them. Press the sheets firmly around each necklace and then roll the sheets up. Your necklaces should be tangle-free on arrival and wearable for toasts, dancing and gift exchanges. See this how-to video for details.

  1. Consider using some of your small neckerchiefs and or scarves, as makeshift bags for your rings and small earring sets. Place them in the center of the scarf, then bring opposite corners together and knot them together to make a ‘bag’ of it.

  1.  Another way to keep necklaces tangle-free is to pull one necklace chain through a straw and then the other through another straw. This will keep your delicate necklaces from knotting together.

  1. Some of you like to collect all things small – like tiny mint containers after the mints are long gone because they’re cute. Put them to good use and stow a few rings, cuff links or earring studs in them.

  1. Store a watch, a few bracelets, or earrings inside extra eyeglass cases.

  1. Those extra buttons that come sown inside our clothes are handy for more than a back up to your lost original fastener. Medium to larger buttons are a fun way to secure smaller earrings and keep them from getting scattered in your luggage or carry-on.

  1. You may have some pairs of socks you’re bringing. They make secure and reliable storage for rings, watches and or, bracelets.

  1. Are you traveling for pleasure and business? Your business cards are another way to secure jewelry like earrings, or broaches. Punch the card with the post and secure the back/hook on the reverse side of the card.

  1. When it comes to deciding which jewelry or accessory pieces to bring, lighter pieces are easier and obviously take less space. However, if you can’t live without your larger statement pieces, narrow it down one or two.

  1. Do your party wears have beautiful sequin embellishments? Wrap these in tissue wrapping paper to keep them from getting snagged by other items in your suitcase.

  1. If you have multiple delicate embellished and or, sequin-covered garments, then secure them in a garment bag separate of your everyday clothing, and place wrapping tissue around/between them inside the garment bag.

  1. Or, if you recycle shopping bags, use the larger ones as a protector between each garment. Punch a hole through the top of the shopping bag and pull the hanging item through it.

I hope these tips make your holiday packing easier!  If you still need help choosing what clothing and accessories to bring on your holiday travels, let’s talk.

Happy Holidays!

Vacation Style – Packing for It

Summer will soon be here along with vacations. You can feel the anticipation amovacation styleng your friends and coworkers. You’re excited, but not about packing for it, or deciding what you’ll wear.

Many of you are headed for a body of water and or, at least somewhere with cooler temps. If you’re like the ‘old’ me, your packing efforts was ‘more is better, just in case.’ Here’s some ways to simplify the process – and make sure your luggage is under the weight limit.

No matter the length of your trip, these are essentials:

• One light jacket/sweater for the plane and anywhere the A/C will be set for ‘Fall’, i.e. under 70/65 degrees (depending how cold-natured you are).
• One pair of walking shoes. This can be a flat, sneaker, or a low platform sandal with a well made cushioned sole.
• If you don’t like walking barefoot on hotel floors, flip flops can double as slippers (which can be bulkier and take up more space).
• One pair of ‘dressy’ shoes. For ladies, this doesn’t need to be a traditional pump, but something with a heel (kitten/stiletto, it doesn’t matter) that will serve well for things like a ‘surprise’ sunset dinner cruise from your significant other.
• Two or three colors that are your favorites that can be mixed up with neutral pieces of clothing. It sounds limiting – especially some of those recommendations on Pinterest, but believe me, there are many options within a three-color palette.
• A swimsuit with bright pops of color or fun patterns – they have great layering opportunities.

Most of all you still want to feel good and look like you, when you’re on vacation. Should you need some assistance in determining your best looks and or, your travel color palette,  I can help you. You can contact me here for more information, or to schedule a vacation style session.
